About Themis

Built to fight unfair medical bills.

Themis is named after the Greek Titaness of justice, divine law, and fairness. We chose the name because the medical billing system in this country is none of those things — and patients deserve tools to fight back.

The problem

Why Themis exists

Up to 80% of medical bills contain errors. Duplicate charges, incorrect billing codes, services billed but never provided, balance billing that violates state law — the list goes on. The average American doesn't know how to find these errors, and the people who do know charge 25–35% of whatever they save you.

That means on a $10,000 hospital bill with $3,000 in errors, a traditional billing advocate takes $750–$1,050 just to tell you what went wrong. And that's if you can find one, afford one, and wait weeks for the review.

Themis changes that. For $19 a month, you upload your bill and your insurance EOB, and the platform shows you exactly where the numbers don't match. No middleman. No percentage cuts. No waiting.

The product

What Themis does

Themis is a self-service medical bill reconciliation platform. You upload your medical bills and Explanation of Benefits documents, and Themis helps you:

  • Match charges side-by-side between what your provider billed and what your insurance processed
  • Flag discrepancies — duplicate charges, coding mismatches, balance billing risks, and overcharges
  • Track your deductible and out-of-pocket spending against your plan maximums
  • Generate dispute letters tailored to your specific situation

Everything happens in your browser. Your medical documents are processed locally and never leave your device. We built it this way on purpose — because your medical records are nobody's business but yours.

Our foundation

Built on three pillars

Every Lonia AI product is built on the same three non-negotiable principles — from the first line of code, in every tier, with no exceptions.

Accessibility

Themis meets WCAG 2.2 Level AA and Section 508 standards. Every feature is keyboard navigable. Every element works with screen readers. High contrast mode, large text mode, and reduced motion preferences are all supported. Accessibility is not a premium add-on — it's built into the foundation of every tier, including Starter.

Compliance

Themis is not a covered entity under HIPAA — but we built it to HIPAA-grade standards anyway, because handling medical billing data responsibly shouldn't require a legal mandate. All significant actions are audit-logged. Data minimization is enforced by architecture. Your right to delete your data is honored — fully and promptly.

Security

No passwords. Ever. Themis uses Google OAuth exclusively — we store zero credentials. All data in transit and at rest is encrypted. Row-level security ensures every user can only access their own data. Medical documents stay in your browser's local storage and are never transmitted to our servers.

The company

Part of the Lonia AI family

Themis is built by Lonia AI, a software company that builds high-trust tools for the people and industries that need them most.

Our mission: Build high-trust software that expands access — securely, compliantly, and by design.

Lonia AI builds for two groups the tech industry consistently underserves: professionals in regulated industries who need tools they can actually trust, and communities that technology routinely ignores — people with disabilities, patients trapped by predatory billing systems, and individuals the market has decided are too hard or too niche to serve.

The name Lonia comes from Pellonia in Roman mythology — the goddess who wards off enemies and protects. Every product in the Lonia family carries that purpose.

The founder

Built by Mary Leriche

Mary Leriche is the founder and sole builder of Lonia AI. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Rutgers University and a Master of Business and Science (MBS) — a combined MBA and MS in IT with a concentration in User Experience Design — also from Rutgers. She has over 10 years of professional experience in UX design, front-end development, and accessibility, including leading WCAG and Section 508 redesigns for New Jersey and South Carolina state government websites.

She also spent time as a certified home health aide and in medical office operations — working patient intake, billing, scheduling, and family coordination. She's seen the medical billing system from both sides. Themis exists because she knows exactly how broken it is.
